Lady Redhounds finish strong

Donnie Head’s Corbin Lady Redhounds’ tennis team finished the regular season on a high note after disposing of Middlesboro, 4-1, in match play.

Corbin’s Morgan Freeman defeated the reigning singles regional champion Emily Crawford by picking up an easy 8-1 victory.

Erin Hart also won in singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win, while Sritha Reddy dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Natalie Dubin.

In doubles play, Melanie Head/Sydney Ledington won 6-1, 6-2, along with teammates Bailee Freeman and Nikki Freeman (6-4, 6-4).

The win improved the Lady Redhounds to 13-3 on the season.

“This was our last regular season match,” Head said. “The regional will start next Tuesday at Whitley County with Middlesboro, Clay County and Corbin being the favorites to win.

“We have split matches with both, winning at home and losing to both away,” he added. “Morgan Freeman has been playing strong and is capable of winning the regional title. The doubles team of Melanie Head and sixth-grader Sydney Ledington should receive a high seed in the regional tournament. If you would have said at the beginning of the year that we would be 13-3, I would have said, ‘no way’. We are so young of a team that it is scary to think what these girls may do on the state level in a couple of years.”
