The Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets won their second straight game Tuesday, dominating visiting Cawood, 11-0 in five innings.
Williamsburg (15-10) scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
“We scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the second inning,” Williamsburg coach Andrea Ellis said. “We scored one in the third and two more in the fourth. They really came out hitting the ball.
“We had to adjust a little bit to their pitcher, but they really came out hitting,” he added. “I think in the first inning about every batter got on base. We played a really solid game defensively — we just played a really good game.”
Williamsburg junior Cecily Sears dominated the Trojanettes on the mound, striking out more than half the batters she faced. She pitched all five innings in the shutout victory.
“She had over 10 strikeouts,” Ellis said of Sears. “She came out solid after the first couple of batters. She really came through for us this game.”
Ellis said her team is steadily improving as the post-season approaches.
“The whole plan was to play in all these tournaments and tougher games at the end of the season to kind of prepare us for the district (tournament),” Ellis said. “I really think that this tournament that we hosted last weekend really helped us. We saw some good pitching and played against Bowling Green. We only lost to Bowling Green, 4-2.
“I’m not satisfied with a loss, but we played a good game,” she added. “They are in the same district as the state champs from last year, Greenwood, and they played with Greenwood.”
The Lady Yellow Jackets will travel to Madison Souther Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
