Lauren Wombles became South Laurel’s career hit leader after connecting with a two-run home run during the the Lady Cardinals’ 7-2 win over 12th Region power Garrard County.
The homer — Wombles’ 255th — gave South Laurel (23-5) a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
“We really came out hitting the ball well,” South Laurel coach Kaye Smith said. “I thought we really had a good team effort out there. Garrard County is a good team and we’re happy to get the win. We will play them again this weekend.”
The win turned out to be the Lady Cardinals’ third in a row since their 6-3 loss to Richmond Model on April 29.
South Laurel has outscored its opponents 31-2 during the process.
“We’re playing well right now,” Smith said. “Porsha pitched well again and I believe us getting back into the swing of things was something the girls were going to have to overcome themselves. The coaches can only do so much.
“The big key is that we’re really starting to hit the ball,” she added.
The Lady Cardinals finished with 12 hits against the Lady Lions and will look to continue their impressive play of late against Estill County at home Thursday.
“We need to keep playing consistent ball,” Smith said. “Lauren accomplished a major feat and we have some more girls that’s getting ready to break some records, too.”
South Laurel’s game against Estill County is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
