Reading Rocks

Hundreds of student readers recognized, participate at reading event Thursday

By Sean Bailey / Staff Writer

Knox County’s most voracious readers were recognized at Barbourville City School on Thursday.

Hundreds of students from the Knox County Public School district and the Barbourville Independent School District were recognized for going “above and beyond their reading level” Kay Dixon instructional supervisor for Knox County School District said.

The theme of this year’s event was “Reading Rocks,” and there was plenty of “rock and roll” throughout the program. Kara Beth Lundy a student from Barbourville City School started the celebration off with her rendition of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.” The Rockin’ Readers and Trailer Rock and Roll Band also preformed during the “after-party.”

Besides receiving certificates, elementary students from the Knox County area got to act out their favorite books.

Flat Lick elementary students put on a performance of “Where the Wild Things Are.” First-grader Austin Edwards dressed as one of the monsters from the book. His favorite part of reading “is the funny parts,” and he’s a big fan of non-fiction books.

“I like mysteries. It gets really fun when you get into them,” sixth-grader Bethany Dezarm, who was also dressed as a monster said.
