Students come up with creative entrances for Corbin prom

Saturday night, residents filled the bleachers outside the Corbin Civic Center in hopes of catching a glimpse and maybe a picture or two of the evening’s stars.
But this gala was not a Hollywood premiere — Corbin High School held its junior-senior prom at the civic center, and how the students get there is definitely a spectator event.
For these students, a dazzling entrance is as important as the final dance. Although this year’s prom had a Greek theme, there were no horse-drawn chariots to be found. Instead, students arrived in everything from RVs and school buses to portable toilets.
Upon each student’s arrival, he or she was greeted by the prom’s emcees, Kyle Kimball and Victoria Petry. After a brief introduction, attendees turned to the crowd and posed for photos before making their way down the “gold carpet” and to the prom festivities inside the civic center.
Sharon Maguet, one of the prom’s organizers, said the entrances not only provide entertainment for the crowds, but also give the students a chance to express their personalities.
“I think the students really enjoy it,” she said. “It gives them an opportunity to show off their gowns and tuxedos to the crowd. It’s fun and exciting to see how they arrive. It’s something fun for the community.”
Corbin High School Principal Joyce Phillips said many who have a vested interest in the school help to make sure the prom is pulled off without a hitch.
“We have a group of teachers and a group of parents every year and they help the students get it together,” she said.
Each year, the junior class votes on the theme of the prom. Maguet said planning started months ago, but the end result was better than what organizers envisioned.
“We started planning back in the fall, around October,” she said. “It really came out better than we expected. We had great help and support from parents and the community. We were happy to get to use the Corbin Civic Center. This turned out really beautiful. We’re really pleased.”
For students, attending the prom is a fun evening that marks the end of a long journey.
“It’s very important,” said senior Kayla Helton. “This is the last big thing before graduation.”
“It’s just a way for everybody to go all out before graduation,” said senior Meggie Murray. “If it wasn’t for the prom, senior year would suck.”
At the end of the night, Devon Rogers was crowned the prom king and Alli Burton was crowned the prom queen.
