Geneva Gilbert Shackelford, of Corbin, departed this life on Aug. 7, 2012, at Manor Care of Marietta in Marietta, Ga. She was 88 years, 3 months, and 28 days of age. She was born April 10, 1924 in Forge Ridge, Tenn. to the late Franklin and Nola Williams Gilbert.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Colonel (USAF retired) Henry S. Shackelford; brothers, Burton L. and Harry H. Gilbert; sister and brother-in-law, Edith L. and Bradley Brooks; sister, Opal S. Sandefur; and brother-in-law, Oran L. Ray.
She is survived by daughter, Sandy and son-in-law, Kerry Evans of Roswell, Ga.; granddaughters, Jordan and Kayden Evans, of Roswell, Ga.; stepson, Phillip Michael Shackelford, of Louisville; sisters, Thelma L. Ray, Bobbie C. Burke (JC), and Frankie M. Crawford (Willis), of Monroe, Mich., and Itha Bea Monday (Curtis), of Brookville, Ind.; brothers, Roy H. Gilbert (Christene) of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Marvin L. Gilbert (Cathy), of Zionsville, Ind.; as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
Geneva was an executive secretary at Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, Tenn. where she received the honor of Secretary of the Year before retiring in 1961. Married in July 1961, she and Buck spent their first years of marriage traveling to England and Spain with his military career. Settling in New Jersey for 10 years, Geneva was busy being Girl Scout Leader, Room Mom, and an amazing wife and mother. Geneva and Buck retired to Corbin, Kentucky in 1977 and enjoyed being members of the Shrine Club. She was a member of the Corbin Presbyterian Church. After Buck’s passing in 1996, Geneva moved to South Carolina to be with Sandy and Kerry, and then to Georgia with them in 2001. Geneva loved reading, weekly beauty shop appointments, and eating dessert first.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday Aug. 11, 2012 at the O’Neil-Lawson Funeral Home Chapel in Corbin with Rev. Bobby Joe Eaton officiating. Following the service she will be laid to rest in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Corbin. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m., Saturday, until the funeral hour.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Samaritan’s Purse or the Salvation Army.
