Joe Stanford

Joe Myres Stanford, of Williamsburg, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. Born June 18, 1933, in Rossville, Ga., he was the son of the late George W. and Edisto Myres Stanford.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna Grace, and a brother, George Richard (Dick) Stanford.

He is survived by his children: son Joe Jr. (Jody), daughter Pamela, one granddaughter Niki and husband Paul White, great-granddaughter Raegan, and great-grandson Landen White, all of Williamsburg; one sister Caroline and husband Ed Marsh of Canton, Ga., sister-in-law Margie Stanford, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., also cousins, great-nieces and nephews and a host of local and other friends he has made who contributed to his success in life to mourn his passing.

Joe Stanford was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church. He was a Mason belonging to Williamsburg Lodge No. 490.

He attended Abraham Baldwin College and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1954 with a degree in forestry. After graduating, he was employed with Georgia Forestry Commission. In 1955, he was employed by Hiwassee Land Co., the land company of Bowater Southern Paper Corp. of Calhoun, Tenn.

Joe Stanford served on the city council of Williamsburg, he was on the board of directors at Farmer National Bank, advisor at Community Trust Bank, he was nominated and served several years as a director of American Pulpwood Association, which is an international association for the timber industry.

In 1962, his family moved to Williamsburg where he opened Williamsburg Pulpwood & Timber Inc. He operated this business with their son, Jody. He and his wife, Ann, owned several businesses in the Williamsburg area (J&A Enterprise, NAPA Auto Parts, and others). He shipped pulpwood to Bowater Southern Paper Co. In 1981, he opened Stanford Timber Product in East Bernstadt, shipping wood chips to Willamette Industries. He retired in 1999 and enjoyed retirement with his family.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the building fund of Main Street Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be nephews and good friends Edgar Bryant, Lonnie Walden and Jimmy Curd.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Main Street Baptist Church Sunday School class of Tom Holcomb and Men’s Bible Class of First Baptist Church of Williamsburg. Also friends George Kraft, Richard Wehrle and all wood suppliers from whom he purchased pulpwood.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Wright and Dr. Jerry Lowrie. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. today (Tuesday).

Ellison Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
