CORBIN — Frank Carnes Sr.

Frank Ferrell Carnes Sr. “Prof” died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at his residence in Williamsburg. He was born Dec. 23, 1921, to Elmer Euin and Ruth Ferrell Carnes in Thaxton, Miss. He grew up there with his brothers and sisters on the family farm.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Force as a ball turret gunner with the 460th Bomb Group 761st Squadron. This squadron completed 50 combat missions.

On May 26, 1948, he married Savannah Barbara Blanton. They had three children Frank, Cathy and Robert.

He received a Bachelor of Arts from Mississippi College, a Master of Arts from the University of Mississippi, a Bachelor of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy from Vanderbilt University.

From 1954 until 1989, he was a professor at Cumberland College having taught courses in English, psychology, philosophy and religion. During his tenure, he was named head of the English Department. Following his retirement from Cumberland, he taught for five more years at the Eastern Kentucky University extension locations in Corbin and Manchester.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers, Thomas Robert, James Reeves, and Howard Shirley Carnes; sisters, Marion Carnes Hall and Rachel Nix Carnes; and a Grandson Simon “Sim” Leonard Renfro IV.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Blanton Carnes, three children, Frank Ferrell Carnes Jr., Catharine Carnes (Ronnie) Renfro, Robert Garland (Bethani) Carnes; four grandchildren, Aaron Ferrell and William Joseph Renfro, Zachary Ryan and Kaitlyn Brooks Carnes.

A private memorial service will be held at the Croley Addition of the Highland Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Hospice of the Bluegrass, 1020 Cumberland Falls Highway, Corbin, KY 40701.
