James Parker


PARKER, James Edwin, Jr., M.D., 86, passed from this life to heaven on Saturday, January 19, 2013.

He was born in Gray, KY, the son of Dr. & Mrs. James E. Parker, Sr. After 35 years of teaching and practicing in pathology at the University of Louisville Hospital and School of Medicine, he retired to enjoy his hobbies.He had attended Corbin High School, and was a graduate of Union College, Barbourville, KY. In 1951 after graduating from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine, he worked as a pathology resident at U of L and the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, he was board certified in Anatomic Pathology in 1957.He served 3 years with the US Public Health Service and was owner and director with Wm. Christopherson of the Parker Cytology Laboratory. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Southern Medical Society, the American Physician Art Association, Greater Louisville Medical Society, past president of the American Society of Cytology and a veteran of World War II. He served on the board of trustees of Union College, Barbourville, KY for 34 years. He was an active member of Buechel United Methodist Church.

He was a loving husband and father.His interests included medical photography, artistic paintings and singing with the Louisville Thoroughbred Barber Shop Chorus, the Wandering Minstrels, the Kentucky Opera, and The Louisville Singers. He produced and directed plays and musicals at his church. He also appeared as the lead in productions at the Jewish Community Center where he played the king in The King and I and Don Quixote.

 Survivors include a wife of 62 years, Elsie Parker, two daughters, Kathleen (Melvin, Jr.) Geist of Tucson, AZ, Patricia Parker-(Steven)Miller of Mt. Gilead, OH, one son, Richard E. (Tina) Parker of Louisville, two sisters, Edwina Bachschmid (Emil H.) of Alexandria VA, and Mary Parker Smith, MD of Paducah, and one brother William E. K. (Norma) Parker of Richmond, VA.He is also survived by five grandchildren, and six great grand children.

Memorial gifts may go to Union College, 310 College Street, Barbourville, KY 40906, or to Buechel United Methodist Church, 2817 Hikes Lane, Louisville, KY 40218.

Visitation will be on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd., Louisville, KY 40205. The memorial service will be at Buechel United Methodist Church of Louisville on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 1 p.m.
