Pauline Oxendine

CORBIN — Pauline Marie Cox Oxendine, age 93, of Calvin, passed away Nov. 15, 2013, at her home.

Born Aug. 12, 1920, to the late Alex and Maddie Cox, she was raised in Gray, along with four brothers and three sisters. She met and married James Thomas Oxendine in June 1938. She and JT settled in Calvin, where they had two sons, Bobby and Jerry, and three daughters, Sue, Judy and Pauletta. They lost little Bobby while small, but raised the rest of the family on Hances Creek, along with JT’s little sister, Katie. After many years of marriage, JT passed away in 1982 after a battle with cancer, with Pauline, being the loving and caring wife she was, never leaving his side until he left her for only a short time to be with the Lord. Pauline continued to raise and lead her family throughout the following years, until her battle with Alzheimer’s began. She fought a tough fight over the last ten years, until the Lord decided it was time for her to make her journey home.

Pauline was a member of Varilla Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother – always with a stern hand, a warm heart and a bright, beautiful smile. She took pride in her family — always there to lend an ear and to shed light on any problem you may share with her. You might not always have agreed with what she said, but there was never any doubt how she believed. She helped many neighbors and friends along her life’s journey, never asking for recognition for herself, but always looking for the best in others and in the joys God granted her and her family.

Along with her parents and husband, Pauline was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Oxendine; one daughter, Pauletta Garland; two sons-in-law, Shelby Garland and Creed Pursifull; one grandson, Roddy Miracle; two granddaughters, Teresa Miracle and Nicky Smith; four brothers, Jeff Cox, Parker Cox, Kelly Cox, and Glen Cox; three sisters, Maggie Winager, Ethel Burns, and Elvie Engle; and her very special sister-in-law, Katie Oxendine.

Pauline is survived by one son, Jerry (Becky) Oxendine, of Calvin; two daughters, Sue Pursifull, of Abingdon, Va., and Judy (Roger) Miracle, of Mount Washington. She is also survived by her grandsons, Tommy Pursifull, Timothy Oxendine, Anthony Oxendine, and Alex Garland; her granddaughters, Lori, Cindy, and Sarah; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at 5 p.m. at Varilla Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at noon, also at the church. The Rev. Bob White and the Rev. Bruce Cupp will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Cox Family Cemetery at Gray.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie. Announcement courtesy of the Corbin Funeral Home.
