CORBIN — Dr. John Duke Jr.

Dr. John Porter Duke Jr., of Williamsburg, departed this life on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at the Baptist Health Corbin hospital. He was 84 years, 3 months, and 9 days of age. He was born on March 21, 1929, in DeQueen, Ark., to the late John Porter Duke Sr. and Mamie Grant Duke.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wayne Duke. He was a member of First Baptist Church and he was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during the Korean War.

Dr.  Duke earned his bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Louisiana College, his master’s degree from Louisiana State University, and his doctorate from the University of Mississippi.  He was first appointed to the Cumberland College faculty in 1959, and subsequently served in many leadership roles including Dean of Men, Dean of Student Affairs, Dean of College Personnel, Dean of Student Services, Director of the Graduate Program, and Chairman of the Department of Education.  In his 36 years with Cumberland College, Dr. Duke made extraordinary contributions beyond his classroom duties.  He introduced track and cross country, tumbling and trampoline and gymnastics to the college’s athletic program.  For 22 years he lent his voice as field announcer for the Williamsburg football games.  Dr. Duke also pioneered the establishment of TV-3 and served as yearbook sponsor for more than 22 years. He was a member of the Association of Teacher Educators, the American Middle School Association, the Southern Association of Teacher Education and served on the executive board of the Kentucky Association of Teacher Educators. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by his wife, Henrietta Stengel Duke, of Williamsburg; two  sons, Robert F. Duke and wife, Lea, of Newark, Calif., and Grant Duke, of Williamsburg; two daughters, Melinda Blevins and husband, William, of Hulen, and Donna DuBay, of LaPeer, Mich.; three grandchildren, Taylor Duke, Lydia Howard and husband, Charles, and David Carmack III; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Howard and Rachel Howard; one sister; Shirley Gain and husband, Walter, of Lake Charles, La.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends to mourn his passing.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the funeral hour Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. .  Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ande Meyer, Dr. John Broome and Chuck Dupier officiating.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at the Whitley Memorial Gardens in Williamsburg with Military Honors provided by the University of the Cumberlands ROTC cadets.

Former players of Coach Duke from the Cumberland College Track Team will serve as pallbearers.
