Shirley Essex

CORBIN — Shirley H. Essex, 74, of New Concord, passed away at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014. She was born Sept. 1st, 1939, to the late Lewis and Mary M. (Douglas) Siler near Saxton.

Shirley was a devoted and loving wife, and considered her main job to be taking care of her children; with a special focus placed on her handicapped daughter. She was a member of the Stop Nine Church of Christ in Byesville. She enjoyed cooking for them, baking tasty pies, breads, and cinnamon rolls. Her love of baking led her to winning a Blue Ribbon, earning first place, for her mouth-watering pecan pie. Her signature meal was a rolled rump roast with potatoes and carrots. She will be remembered for the white table cloth that rested on her table. It bears the signature of everyone who ever ate at her table. She was also a Master Puzzler, and loved putting puzzles of all sizes together. All of her pride, in spite of her accomplishments, came from being a mother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Ernest and Mary Essex, her sister, Jean (Troy) Prewitt, and her nephews, Justin Siler and Stephen Parker.

Shirley is survived by her husband, William Essex, whom she wed on Aug. 26th, 1961. It was a blessed and happy union that lasted over 52 years. She also leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her son, Brett (Melissa) Essex, and her daughter, Teresa Essex. She is missed by her brother, Jeff (Sherrie) Siler, and sister, Linda (Kenneth) Anderson; a brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Marlene Parker, as well as her nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

Visitations will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16th at the Farus Funeral Home in New Concord (Formerly the Mock Miller Funeral Home), with a second viewing from 1-2 p.m. on Friday the 17th at the New Concord Church of Christ where the funeral will be held.

Services will begin promptly at 2 p.m. with Evangelist Woody Biggs and Evangelist Mark Beros officiating; with burial taking place in Pleasant Hill Cemetery following services.
