Laurel County inmate escapes

CORBIN — By Austin Williams

Staff Writer

A Laurel County Correctional Center inmate who was scheduled to be released Monday briefly escaped from a work release crew on Dan Westerfield Road Wednesday.

The London man was serving a short sentence for DUI and drug paraphernalia charges.

Laurel County Jailer Jamie Mosley reports that Dale E. Valentine, 32, of London, was picking up trash in the ditch along Dan Westerfield road between Hwys. 229 and 830 when he walked away from the area about 10:40 a.m. Local and state law enforcement responded and began to search an area bounded on two sides by Dan Westerfield Road and Hwy. 229.

Around 1:30 p.m. law enforcement received word that Valentine might be at a home on Robinson Creek Road (Hwy. 830). Valentine was discovered hiding behind the home and was taken into custody by Laurel County Correctional Officers, Laurel and Knox County Sheriff’s deputies, and Kentucky State Police troopers, Mosley said.

Valentine was re-jailed at the Laurel County Correctional Center, charged with escape. He may also be charged with burglary and theft relating to acts he may have committed during his brief stint outside correctional custody.

Before Wednesday’s incident, Valentine was only four days from completing his sentence, which stemmed from a Feb. 26 arrest for DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to signal, no registration receipt, and rear license not illuminated.

The investigation of the escape by the Laurel County Correctional Center is ongoing.
