Fire destroyed the home of a White Town man Wednesday night, forcing him to stay with relatives.
“I was having a hamburger over at my parents’ house,” said the homeowner, Larry Barton. “All of a sudden, I told my Dad ‘I smell smoke.’”
Barton said his father got up from the table and looked to his home next door — and the front porch was on fire.
“We carried buckets of water over there,” said Barton’s father, George Barton.
But it didn’t work.
The fire was at 1478 Highway 895, west of I-75.
Several units from Woodbine Volunteer Fire Department, Goldbug Volunteer Fire Department, and even a tanker unit from Oak Grove responded to the blaze, as well as members of the Williamsburg Fire and Rescue.
But the residence was a total loss.
“No one got hurt, thank God,” Larry Barton said.
Goldbug Fire Captain Dorman Patrick, Sr. said firefighters believe the fire began in the television set, then burned through the wall to the front porch.
Whitley County Deputy Shawn Jackson was also on hand, and workers with Cumberland Valley Electric inspected the scene.
