Laurel collision kills two

Two-vehicle crash on Old Richmond Road leaves two others seriously injured

Two people inside a car were killed, while two others inside an SUV were seriously injured, after a two-vehicle collision in Laurel County Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred two miles north of London on KY 3434 — a stretch of highway also referred to as the Old Richmond Road. All victims were from Laurel County.

Killed in the wreck were two inside the Chevy Cobalt car.

The driver, Dustin L. Starks, 23, of Hwy. 490 in East Bernstadt; and a passenger, Barbara R. Hurley, 36, of Jackson Road in East Bernstadt, both suffered fatal injures and were pronounced dead at the scene by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.

Two people inside the Cadillac SUV were injured seriously.

The driver, Elizabeth Engle, 52, of Highmore Road in London; and a passenger, Duane Barlow, 46, of Hwy. 490 in East Bernstadt, both were taken by ambulances to Saint Joseph London hospital for treatment.

The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday.

 According to Laurel County Sheriff John Root, the Chevy Cobalt was traveling north on KY 3434 when it apparently lost control after the car’s right front tire dropped off the roadway. The Chevy went out of control, sliding sideways into the path of the Cadillac SUV, traveling southbound.

After the impact, the Chevy overturned on its top onto the shoulder of the road, while the Cadillac overturned on its side, coming to rest blocking the highway.

The Laurel Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene and in the investigation by the London-Laurel Rescue Squad, the East Bernstadt Volunteer Fire Department, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, the Laurel County Coroner’s Office, and the county’s Emergency Management Director, Abby Hale.

Sgt. Chuck Johnson and Sgt. Richard Dalrymple, accident reconstructionists with the Laurel Sheriff’s Office, continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
