The Knox County attorney has resigned following a recent diagnosis of colon cancer.

Charley Dixon, 48, was diagnosed with cancer in June and is currently undergoing treatment, according to Claudia Greenwood, public relations officer and grant writer for his office.

On Monday, assistant county attorney Gilbert E. Holland was sworn in as the new county attorney. Greenwood said Judge Skip Hammons officiated the ceremony, which was only attended by Holland and Dixon.

Greenwood said the transition was unfortunate given the sad circumstances but it was also seamless.

Dixon served as county attorney since 2003. Greenwood said Dixon worked with many other organizations in Barbourville and Knox County with the aim to better the community. He was the chairman of Knox County UNITE, had worked with tourism and made sure representatives from his office attended other meetings, such as the Knox County Health Coalition.

Dixon maintains a private practice that continues. Greenwood said other attorneys in the firm are handling the caseload while Dixon undergoes treatment.
