Tri-County holiday happenings offer festive fun

The Christmas season is a vibrant one in the Tri-County, and there’s plenty to do to celebrate the season.

Here’s a sampling of local events:

—Barbourville will host its annual Spirit of Christmas festival today (Monday) through Saturday. Today will feature the Decorated Christmas Tree Contest. Tuesday will feature a silent auction for Christmas trees with proceeds going to support Barbourville Tourism’s effort to obtain banners for Main Street. On Friday, “Artisans on the Square” will feature more than a dozen artisans exhibiting their works downtown. Other Friday events include the Top Baker Contest for cooks, the Lighting of the Christmas Tree, and “Barbourville’s Got Talent.” On Saturday,  “Artisans on the Square” will continue. There will be “Santa Run and Elf Dash,” hay rides and train rides sponsored by the Knox County Library, an open house, and music and entertainment on the stage downtown. The night kicks in with the the “I Believe in Santa Claus” parade beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 7 p.m. Following the parade is Santa Claus setting up shop at Barbourville Water Park and a Christmas concert at Union College at 8 p.m. More information can be found at 606-545-9674.

—University of the Cumberlands will have its annual Madrigal Dinners at 6:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. For tickets call 539-4332.

—There will be a live nativity held by the 17th Street Christian Church from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. This event includes free hot chocolate.

—The Laurel County Public Library will host its Holiday Kickoff from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. At 3:30 p.m. Jack Pattie, “The Santa Guy,” will be at the library for photographs with children ages 10 and under. Patrons must bring their own cameras and are advised to begin registering as early as 3:15 p.m. Photographs are limited to the first 75 patrons. The Santa Guy will depart at 5:30 p.m. From 5:30-6 p.m. refreshments will be served in the atrium while pianist Earlene Vance entertains with holiday tunes. Following this, the Children’s Theatre of Cincinatt’s performance of “A Christmas Carol” begins at 6 p.m. Registration for the theatrical performance is appreciated. —London will host its annual Christmas on Main parade. The theme is “All I Want for Christmas.” It begins at 7 p.m. Friday. Call 606-862-8841.

—Central Baptist Church presents “Christmas at Central” at 6 p.m. on  Friday and 5 p.m. on Sunday. This includes dinner, choir music, a Nativity drama, and a presentation of “Alabaster Box,” by Gail Fredrick’s lyrical ballet group. Tickets are on sale at the church. Call 606-528-0379 to register.

—Corbin will hold its annual Christmas parade Friday on Main Street.

—Union College will host a free breakfast with Santa from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the Student Center. Includes crafts, prizes, gifts, and photos with Santa. Call 606-546-1610.

—Union College will host a Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Conway Boatman Chapel. Call 606-546-1610.

—The Rockholds Volunteer Fire Department will host a Christmas Auction at 6 p.m. Saturday at the fire station on Elm Street. Proceeds from the auction will go towards the fire department, according to Lt. Brian Maiden. Call 606-515-8890.

—First Christian Church’s Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Reserve a table at 523-1828.

—Steele’s Chapel Christian Church will host the free Cumberland Valley Christmas concert from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday featuring Christian artist Jeff Greene. Refreshments to follow. Call 606-523-8181.

—Williamsburg’s Christmas in a Small Town will be Saturday, Dec. 14, at Bill Woods Park. The event begins at 6 p.m. and includes a parade followed by an ornament exchange and community caroling.

—Kentucky Sound Down and Belk is sponsoring Sensory Santa for children with special needs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Belk. Includes free photos with Santa. Registration appreciated at 606-304-0334 or visit sounddown.org.
