No injuries in 25E crash

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

No one was injured and no charges are expected to be filed after a crash on U.S. 25E early Thursday afternoon.

The crash involved a tractor-trailer and a Pontiac SUV.

It was at the four-way intersection where Booger Hollow Road and Middle Fork Richland Road meet with U.S. 25E between Corbin and Barbourville, north of Bailey Switch.

Clarence Hinkle, who operates a roadside produce stand on the northbound side of the highway, watched the crash unfold before him.

“Yeah, I saw it happen,” Hinkle said. “That truck was trying to do a U-turn — and pulled right out in front of her. She had no where to go.”

The Pontiac ended up in the median.

The driver of that SUV, Debbie Shepherd, of Bell County, was headed southbound on U.S. 25E with her elderly mother, Betty Hensley, also of Bell County.

“He just pulled over on me,” Shepherd said, adding she and her mother were shaken up but not injured.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Tony Hall, of North Carolina, said he had pulled into the southbound emergency lane to make a U-turn.

“I started making the turn and she just come around me,” Hall said. “It was just one of them freak things I guess.”

Kentucky State Police Officer Mark Scott said when Hall attempted the U-turn, Shepherd’s vehicle was in a blind spot.

“He just wasn’t able to see her and they hit,” he said.

Assisting KSP at the scene were members of the Bailey Switch Volunteer Fire Department and Knox County EMS.
