CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A Laurel County man was airlifted to a Lexington hospital late Friday after he was stabbed several times with a butcher knife, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

The stabbing happened about 9:30 p.m. at a home along Line Creek Road, located seven miles west of London.

Deputy Daniel Grigsby, along with Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter and deputies Mikey Ashurst and Kevin Berry, responded to the 911 call.

Once at the home, they found the wounded man, who was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment.

The stabbing reportedly occurred after the man and a woman, Michelle F. Smith, 41, of Lily, had been drinking. The two argued and Smith got the knife and stabbed the man.

When deputies arrived, Smith had fled. She was found and arrested Saturday evening along Rough Creek Road, located southeast of London. She was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place and jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Following an interview Sunday afternoon, Smith was charged with first-degree assault (domestic violence). She remained jailed as of that time.

Late Sunday, a University of Kentucky Hospital official said the stabbing victim had been discharged from the hospital.

Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County assisted at the scene Friday.

Detective Charlie Loomis lead the investigation.
