Armed Laurel man shoots self, holds deputies at bay

The Times-Tribune

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

An armed London man held deputies at bay for more than 40 minutes Friday after he shot himself in the chest, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Ricky Joe Clark, 53, of Locust Grove Road, reportedly shot himself in the chest with a rifle about 6:30 p.m. and, when Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter along with deputies Robbie Grimes, Mikey Ashurst, and Daniel Grigsby responded, they found Clark on his front porch. Clark was still armed and he refused help.

While Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County waited nearby, Poynter negotiated with Clark until he and other deputies were able to get close enough to wrestle the rifle away from Clark.

Clark was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment.

As of late Sunday, a hospital official indicated she had no information on Clark’s condition.

Clark had reportedly argued with his wife prior to shooting himself.

The investigation into the incident continues.
