Police Roundup - Sept. 18, 2013

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

Man hospitalized after crash involving deputy

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a three-vehicle crash, which left a London man injured on Monday night, according to Sheriff John Root.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter is investigating the crash which occurred around 5:59 p.m. on Waterworks Road, one mile west of London.

Deputy Larry Parrott was westbound in a fully marked Laurel County Sheriff’s Office police car investigating a complaint of four-wheelers and motorcycles driving recklessly up and down the road there.

As Parrott started into a curve, he observed a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle coming at him on the wrong side of the road at an extreme rate of speed, according to the report.

Though Parrott steered to the right side of the road and stopped, the motorcycle still struck the police cruiser in the left front, ejecting Joshua Hedrick, 21, onto the pavement behind the police car.

Hedrick had multiple injuries and was airlifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center. He has since been discharged.

A third vehicle driven by Jason Asher, of London, was westbound ahead of the police car. His vehicle received debris damage but Asher was not injured, according to the police report.

Parrott was not injured in the crash either. Three witnesses to the crash were located.

Assisting at the scene was Sheriff John Root, Capt. Rodney Van Zant and Deputy Daniel Grigsby. Also assisting was Ambulance Inc of Laurel County.

The investigation is continuing.

Sheriff’s department investigates moped theft

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of a moped cycle, which was stolen from South Laurel Road on Sunday afternoon, according to Sheriff John Root.

The victim, Michael L. Mckee, of Corbin, reported he was involved in a collision with another vehicle earlier in the day, and he left his moped at the scene, planning on returning later in the day to retrieve it.

The other vehicle’s driver transported him to the hospital at Saint Joseph London hospital to check for possible injuries. When the victim returned to the scene, the moped had apparently been stolen.

The stolen moped is a 2013 Jon Way, made by JM Star Motorcycle. If new, the moped is valued at $850, however, it is believed that it was a total loss due to the crash.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office at 606-864-6600.
