Once again, public schools in Kentucky are asking communities to join them to help students in college and career readiness.

In Knox County, that time starts today (Thursday), as “Operation Preparation” kicks off, starting a series of events lasting through Friday, March 29.

Knox County Public Schools have two events on tap for today and Friday at the Union College campus in Barbourville. Both events will be held from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

During both sessions which start off Operation Preparation, 10th grade students from Knox County’s two public high schools will tour the Union campus and will shadow an actual college class that will be taking place. In addition, the 10th graders will meet with Union’s student ambassadors and get a chance to experience college life.

Students from Knox Central High School’s 10th grade class will attend Thursday’s session, while 10th grade students from Lynn Camp High School will be on campus during Friday’s session.

Next week, three Knox County Public Schools sites — Knox County Middle School, Knox Central High and Lynn Camp High — will host events from Monday, March 25, to Friday, March 29, from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. During these sessions, community mentors will meet with 8th grade and 10th grade students in one-to-one settings, or small group settings, to discuss the students’ current academic performance, their future education plans, and their future career plans.

Frank Shelton, the district’s public relations director, said via email Wednesday that confirmations were sent to 50 local individuals who have said they would volunteer to mentor a student for next week’s sessions. If you’d like to be one of those volunteering your time to mentor, keep in mind that registration closes tomorrow. You can contact the school district at 606-546-3157, or email them at www.knox.kyschools.us/sites/teaching-and-learning/operation-preparation/ if you need more information.
