A Laurel County couple appeared in Laurel County Circuit Court Friday for a pretrial conference — and the only result was a status hearing set for June 21.
Dustin Eugene Brummett, 26, and Charlene Brummett, 37, face several charges involving sexual abuse of a minor.
Dustin Brummett faces four counts of first-degree rape and two counts of third-degree sodomy, as well as other related charges. Charlene Brummett faces four counts of first-degree complicity to commit rape and two counts of third-degree complicity to commit sodomy, and other related charges.
Dustin Brummett is represented in court by Attorney Mike Brophy. Charlene Brummett’s defense attorney is Barbara Carnes.
Neither Brophy nor Carnes were in court Friday, and attorney Kelly Ridings stood in.
It was learned in court that Charlene Brummett had completed an evaluation at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center in La Grange.
There was some confusion as to whether Brophy had KCPC’s report, but it was determined that the report had been returned.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Terry Beckner agreed that during the June 21 status hearing, the Brummetts’ attorneys could advise them about the need for competency hearings.
Both Brummetts were handcuffed in court Friday and after their appearance were remanded back to the custody of the Laurel County Correctional Center.
Dustin Brummett remains jailed under a $250,000 cash bond.
