Suicide likely cause of man’s death after explosion, Corbin, KY

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

Preliminary autopsy results concerning the death of a man found Thursday after a house explosion in Corbin indicate his death was likely a suicide, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

Neil Spitzer, 29, was a resident of the Dorthae Road duplex — the Thursday explosion in the home caused a subsequent fire.

His body was recovered from inside a Dodge Neon parked under a carport immediately behind the house, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff John Root said the autopsy was conducted in Frankfort on Friday, and that the preliminary findings show Spitzer was killed from a gunshot wound.

Lead investigator Detective Charlie Loomis and Kentucky State Police Arson Investigator Brian Lewis determined that Spitzer apparently set fire to his half of the duplex, then set fire to his Dodge, according to Root.

He then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff added.

That determination was made based on both on-site investigations and evidence recovered from the residence, Root explained, adding a pistol was discovered in the burned-out car.

The residents of the other half of the duplex were not injured in the fire and accounted for at the scene.

It remains unclear what actually caused the explosion, which neighbors reported hearing prior to the blaze. The residence was a total loss.

Besides the sheriff’s office, other agencies working at the explosion and fire Thursday include crew members with the Lily Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, the West Knox Volunteer Fire Department, Campground Volunteer Fire Department, London Fire and Rescue Department, Laurel County Fire Department, the London-Laurel County EMS, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Laurel County EMS, Laurel County Emergency Management, the Kentucky State Police department, the state Fire Marshal, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as several Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies.
