Woman injured in Saturday ATV crash

TIMES TRIBUNE (CORBIN, Ky.)

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

Officials are seeking the public’s help in finding an all-terrain vehicle involved in a crash Saturday afternoon that seriously injured a woman, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

The crash happened about 2 p.m. and, when Deputy Josh Scott along with Deputy Shane Rice, arrived at Pine Grove School Road near its intersection with Philpot Road, they saw Johnny Walters, 28, of Corbin. Root said Walters appeared to be intoxicated.

When questioned by deputies, Walters denied knowledge of an ATV crash.

The deputies then found a seriously injured woman on an embankment nearby. It is believed her injuries were sustained in the ATV crash. The woman was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

An investigation revealed Walters had been driving the ATV, which had been removed from the scene of the crash by other people.

Walters was arrested and charged with public intoxication controlled substances, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious physical injury and failure to render aid. He was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the green four-wheel drive ATV is asked to call the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office at 606-864-6600 or 606-878-7000. Callers can remain anonymous.

Other agencies assisting at the scene included Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, London-Laurel County Rescue Squad and Lily Volunteer Fire Department.
