Murder pretrial conference moved

Scheduled Nov. 1 for woman accused of killing 75-year-old

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

A pretrial conference scheduled in Knox County Circuit Court Friday for a Four Mile woman accused of killing 75-year-old Earl Carter in his home last November was moved to Nov. 1.

And one item slated for discussion is a motion filed by her defense attorney to dismiss the charges.

Charlene Sue King, 50, appeared with her defense attorney Randall Jewell — she remains free on a $50,000 fully-secured bond with ankle monitored home incarceration.

Jewell said that a second reason for the schedule change concerns a Supreme Court ruling made last Friday, which he told Judge Tom Jensen he needed time to review. It was unclear which ruling to which he referred.

Also likely to be scheduled or heard on Nov. 1 is a probable cause hearing, according to Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Dyche.

Jewell also approached the subject of King’s bond, requesting she be released from the ankle bracelet requirement of her bond — she’s been on home incarceration for 10 months, according to Jewell.

“Her (bond) conditions will remain the same for now,” Jensen said.

Carter was shot multiple times in the chest in his J. Goodin Road home Nov. 12 and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a nine-minute 911 recording obtained through an Open Records Request made by the Times-Tribune, King admitted shooting Carter with a 9 mm handgun, and alleged Carter was “trying to take advantage of me.”
