Paying property taxes, getting car inspections and obtaining other services will get easier for those who live in the western part of Knox County,
And, if all goes as planned, that could start today.
The new Corbin location for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office is in the Knox County Annex building on the Cumberland Gap Parkway (U.S. 25E), next door to the branch office of County Clerk Mike Corey.
Once they get up and running, the office will be open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will also have a new phone number which people living in that part of the county can call.
The office number — which is for non-emergency purposes — is 606-620-4995.
Sheriff John Pickard and Chief Deputy Derek Eubanks made the announcement Tuesday morning in Barbourville. Both said it’s the first time ever for a branch in Corbin, and they also agreed that having an office on the west side of the county has been something a lot of people have waited on for quite a while.
“We’ve been waiting to get the office ready for about three months. The office furniture’s been moved in, all the lettering should be on the building later today, and we’re going to try to open there tomorrow,” Pickard said.
“It will be a big convenience to those people who live on that end of the county. For some, it will save them a trip to Barbourville and back. Now, they can do things like get their car tags and county taxes paid at the new office in Corbin,” added Eubanks.
One convenience offered at the new Corbin location will be getting vehicles inspected and buying tags for them, since the Sheriff’s Office and County Clerk’s Office are next door.
“If you have to buy or trade your car, or you lived out-of-state and moved here to switch over your vehicle, you just go to the new Corbin location. People can go to our office to have it inspected, then go next door to Mike’s to have it tagged. We’ll take the inspections over from Mike,” said Pickard.
Eubanks noted the Sheriff’s Office would be contacting new car dealers in Corbin, informing them about the tags and inspection services being offered at their new branch.
Other services offered at the Corbin branch include getting concealed deadly weapons licenses, paper services, and, a new location for residents to pay their county taxes.
In fact, a drop box for tax payments has been set up next to the door for that purpose.
“We have the drop box on the wall where they can pay their taxes at the new location. We also have one at our office in Barbourville. And with taxes coming out next month, people can use those boxes if we’re closed and they’re in a hurry. But if you’re going to do that, we prefer checks only in the drop box. No cash,” Eubanks said.
Tax bills from the Sheriff’s Office will be mailed out the first part of October. If they’re paid by Nov. 1, residents will get a two-percent discount.
The mailing address for the new Knox County Sheriff’s Office branch in Corbin is 14173 North U.S. 25E, Suite B, Corbin, KY, 40701.
Opening a branch in Corbin has been discussed for some time, but Pickard said his office has been waiting for funding to be available. He added the Knox County Fiscal Court and Judge-Executive J.M. Hall were able to make it possible for the Sheriff’s Office to bring a branch location to the western end of the county — something he feels is much needed.
“The people really deserve this service. We’re hoping to keep it open as long as possible. … I think it will be busy down there. I really do,” he said.
“After the office gets settled in, we’ll have a grand opening a couple of weeks after we get the kinks out,” said Eubanks.
