Whitley County knocks off South Laurel, 47-35

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Sports Editor

WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Lady Colonels and South Laurel Lady Cardinals faced off for the second time in less than a week Tuesday, with the Lady Colonels coming away with the win on both occasions.

Whitley County’s Brandi Smith led all scorers with 13 points to guide the Lady Colonels to a 47-35 win.

With the win, Donnie Jones’ squad improved to 3-2 on the young season, while the loss dropped South Laurel to 0-4. While he wasn’t exactly pleased with the overall effort, Jones said he would gladly take the victory.

“I know we didn’t play great, but a win is a win, especially against a district opponent,” Jones said. “Our kids did what they had to do to get the win, but we could have played better and I expect us to down the line.

“The big thing is that good teams win games when they don’t play well and we’re trying to be a good team,” he added.
