CORBIN — The Corbin Lady Redhounds volleyball team won its second straight 50th District Championship Monday, but it didn’t come easily.
Liberty Roberts’ squad needed five sets to get past South Laurel in a 3-2
(30-28, 15-25, 16-25, 25-16 and 17-15) marathon at home, and it didn’t come without drama.
After falling behind two sets to one, Roberts said she had to rally her team by giving them a challenging reality check of sorts on the sidelines.
“I was really proud of the girls tonight and anything I ask of them, they usually go out there and give 100 percent,” she said. “I just challenged them late in the match and asked them if they were really the team that they thought they were and they responded.
“I think Thursday night in our loss against Whitley was one of the best things that could have happened to us in letting us see some of our flaws,” she added. “Tonight was the second best in getting that confidence back before the region tournament.”
Both teams started off somewhat sluggish, trading points back and forth for much of the first set before Corbin was able to close things out with a 30-28 win to move ahead 1-0 in the match.
South Laurel took control in the second and third sets, grabbing wins of 25-15 and 25-16 to take a 2-1 lead in the match, moving within one game of the district title.
Corbin had other ideas though and Allison Worthy helped see them through. Trailing 12-11, Worthy rattled off eight straight service points, four of which were aces, to help give her team an 18-12 lead. The Lady Cardinals managed to cut the lead to four points, but Corbin held on for the 25-16 win to force a decisive fifth set.
Eight ties and six lead changes later, the Lady Redhounds were able to close the match out with a 17-15 win.
