Union College assistant coach arrested for DUI

CORBIN — By Becky Killian and John Ross / Times-Tribune Staff

A Union College assistant baseball coach was arrested early Sunday morning for driving under the influence after he was stopped by London police for speeding, according to Laurel County District Court records.

Justin A. Lilly, 26, of Heidrick, was arrested about  4 a.m. along South Laurel Road, court records indicate. The arresting officer noted “a strong odor” of alcohol coming from the car’s passenger compartment. He also noted Lilly had “glassy, bloodshot eyes.”

Lilly reportedly failed sobriety tests and a breath test result was .114. He was arrested and charged with speeding and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.

Laurel Correctional Center records indicate Lilly is a coach at Union College. The college’s website lists him as an assistant baseball coach.

Lilly was released on a $2,500 surety bond.

During his arraignment in Laurel District Court Monday, Lilly pleaded not guilty to the charges and was denied a public defender. His next court appearance was set for Tuesday, July 2.

Calls to the college seeking comment were not returned as of late Tuesday, however, an email response from Melissa Reid, director of public relations for Union College, stated that Lilly, “tendered his resignation (from the college) at some point this week.”
