Your name and your credit card information may be part of the game being played by someone using a phone scam in the Corbin area. That is what police reported Tuesday, and they advise you to use caution.
In fact, several residents across the city have advised Corbin Police that a person has contacted them in order to obtain their credit card information.
According to Maj. Rob Jones, the scam is done by a man posing as an investigator for a debt collection agency. The man advises the caller that his agency has purchased the debt on a bad check or unpaid bill from several years, and if that person doesn’t pay it with their credit card by giving him the credit card numbers at that instant, a warrant for their arrest will be issued.
Sgt. Glenn Taylor is continuing the investigation into the phone call scam.
If such a call should happen to you, Corbin Police advise not to give out any information whatsoever over the phone. You can also call them at 523-1122 if you have information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the scam artist.
In a non-related matter, Corbin Police are reminding motorists that traffic checkpoints will continue throughout the rest of this year.
A total of 10 highways have been approved for the checkpoints in the city — U.S. 25W (including Cumberland Falls Highway), U.S. 25E (Cumberland Gap Parkway), KY 26 (South Main Street), KY 312 (including Master Street and Gordon Hill Pike), KY 3041 (Corbin Bypass), KY 727 (including 5th Street Road), KY 830, KY 1232, KY 1259 and KY 1629.
Police say traffic checkpoints will be set up on roads with visibility in all directions of travel.
Checkpoints are used to enforce laws relating to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, driver’s licenses, motor vehicle registration and vehicle safety, and proof of insurance. If other actual or suspected violations of state law are observed at the checkpoints, police note they will investigate and enforce them.
Corbin Police noted determining where and when a traffic checkpoint will be held will be done whenever traffic violation problems have been experienced or anticipated at a particular location.
