TRI-COUNTY — Knox County Sheriff John Pickard is asking for the public’s help in identifying a safe found Sunday at U.S. 25E and Hwy. 2418 (Blue Gable Straight).

A deputy was sent to the area when the safe was found on the road. The safe was processed for fingerprints and additional evidence.

Fishermen find crashed car

Two Laurel County men died when the car in which they rode crashed and overturned onto its top at the Bee Rock Campground, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Fishermen found the car after noon Saturday off Hwy. 192 about 18 miles west of London, but Root said it is believed the crash happened sometime overnight.

Deputy Milton Storm is investigating and it is believed the driver of the compact Chevrolet car, Joshua Campbell, 19, of London, was driving through the campground toward the highway when he ran off the road, struck a sign, a dumpster and a large rock. The roof of the car then struck a tree before the vehicle overturned.

London Laurel County Rescue squad had to extricate both Campbell and his passenger, the car’s owner, David Shepherd, 19, of Lily.

Both men were declared dead at the scene.

Also assisting were the Bald Rock Volunteer Fire Department, EMS, and the Laurel County Corner’s Office.

Storm continues his investigation into the cause of the crash.

Corbin man arrested for choking girlfriend

A Corbin man was arrested Sunday after he reportedly grabbed his girlfriend by the neck and choked her, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Larry T. Stephenson, 21, was charged with fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) when he was arrested about 3 p.m. by Deputy Larry Parrott.

Root said when Parrott arrived, he could hear Stephenson and his girlfriend arguing.

Parrot saw red marks on the woman’s neck, Root said.

Stephenson was also charged on a Whitley County bench warrant for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
