Winning bids go out for Sanders Park work

CORBIN — By Jeff Noble / staff writer

Work on Phases 2-4 of the Colonel Sanders Park project was given approval by the Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission, during a special session Tuesday.

Three bids were awarded for the park project, located in downtown Corbin at the corner of Main and Monroe Streets. Out of four bidders, three were chosen to do one phase each.

Together, the winning bids for the three phases came to a total of $21,258.

Board members chose Laurel Gardens to do the landscaping work — or Phase 2 — on the park site, with an apparent low bid of $4,098.

For Phase 3, or the concrete work, EG&K Construction of Corbin was the low bidder at $4,960. They got the award to do the concrete work, along with working on a stoop and steps on the back, and a ramp on the side of the site.

For Phase 4, which involves fencing and nameplate work, Everlasting Gates was the apparent low bidder at $12,200.

It was noted Roark Construction was one of the bidders, but was not approved due to the board saying the company’s bid wasn’t competitive.

Last month, board members approved to advertise for open bids for the three phases, which were separately bid and advertised together. The board closed on the bids during Tuesday’s special meeting, held at the Tourism Community Room on Depot Street.

After the closing, opening and disposition of the bids, the Tourism Board went into executive session, to discuss personnel matters. During the session, two persons were brought in to be interviewed by the board about the Tourism Director’s position.

During their August meeting, they approved the job description for Tourism Director, which was advertised. Applications for the full-time position were accepted from late August through Sept. 30.

After they came out of executive session, board members went back into the special session. They announced that no action was taken at the executive session, and adjourned.

The Tourism Board will meet during their regular session next Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.
