The U.S. Senate’s Republican leader and the man who would like to represent Kentucky for a sixth term in Washington will speak in Corbin on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

The Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce confirmed Monday that U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell will be the guest speaker at the chamber’s monthly membership luncheon, which will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Corbin Center.

McConnell was first elected as Republican Leader in 2006. He’s the 15th Senate Republican Leader, and just the second Kentuckian to lead his party in the Senate. The first was Alben Barkley who led Democrats from 1937 until 1949, when he was sworn in as vice president.

McConnell previously served as Republican Leader in the 110th, 111th and 112th Congresses, and Majority Whip in the 108th and 109th Congresses.

He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984, and is presently serving his fifth term as Kentucky’s senior senator.

Prior to his election in the Senate, McConnell served as Jefferson County Judge-Executive from 1978 to January 1985, when he began his first Senate term.

He currently serves as a senior member of the Senate Appropriations, Agriculture and Rules Committees.

Reservations to the luncheon are recommended. Advanced tickets are $15 per person, or $20 per person at the door.

Chamber spokeswoman Tamara Malloy said Monday they’ve had several requests for company tables at the luncheon. She added the Chamber can seat a minimum of six people and a maximum of eight people at each table, with the charge of $15 per person for advanced reservations.

To purchase tickets, company tables or for more information, call 606-528-6390 or email the chamber at info@southernkychamber.com.

The chamber speech will be the first of two Corbin events that McConnell will be visiting that day. He’s expected to appear at a healthcare forum that is being presented at Baptist Health Corbin hospital at 1:45 p.m.
