Corbin man charged with firing shots at a neighbor

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A Corbin man was arrested Saturday after he reportedly fired a gun twice at a neighbor’s property.

Junior Cornett, 67, was arrested just before midnight after Deputy Tyler Morris and Kentucky State Police troopers responded to a complaint along Cotton Road.

The first 911 call indicated a fight was occurring; however, while officers were responding they were told shots had been fired.

When officers arrived at Cotton Road, they found Cornett, who reportedly smelled strongly of alcohol, standing on the road cursing and yelling.

An investigation indicated Cornett had allegedly fired a shot into the victim’s front yard. He then identified himself as a police officer and walked onto the victim’s property. The victim tried to disarm Cornett, who fired a second shot past the victim’s front door.

Root said the victim’s wife and 13-year-old daughter were inside the home.

Cornett was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, impersonating a peace officer, alcohol intoxication in a public place and second-degree disorderly conduct. He was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Officers assisting Morris at the scene included KSP troopers Brandon Creekmore, Jason McCowan, Chris Roberts and Chris Saunders.
