Flagman struck by vehicle

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

A construction crew flagman who was struck by a vehicle in Knox County Tuesday was released from the University of Kentucky Medical Center Wednesday.

Jeff Flinchem, a safety flagman with George B. Stone Company, was flown by helicopter to UK in Lexington after being struck by a vehicle on KY-11 North near the intersection with KY-2418.

Knox County Deputy Claude Hudson said Karen Crothers, who resides near the area, was driving her Pontiac Grand Am in rainy conditions when she came across the construction zone.

“(Flinchem) had his green neon vest on, and was carrying the six-foot sign,” Hudson said. “She (Crothers) said she saw the other workers at the site, but (Flinchem) just kind of blended in.”

He added that Crothers was not speeding but that the rain may have played a part in the accident.

Sheriff John Pickard said that Hudson arrived at the scene Tuesday morning and found Flinchem receiving treatment from crew members with Knox County EMS.

Pickard said the George B. Stone Company repairs and replaces guard rails — the company had been working under proper safety conditions during the time of the accident with four men working signs in place.

“This is a common occurrence with any road, tree or utility company — and usually occurs with no one getting hurt,” Pickard said. “Our highway road departments and utility companies have a hard and dangerous job and (I ask) all motorists to please be aware of the signs and respectful as they work on our roads and utility systems.”
