Wanted man arrested after traffic stop

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A man wanted in Pike County was arrested Friday after a traffic stop for speeding, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Christopher Smith, 38, of Williamson, W.Va., was arrested about 6:30 p.m. by Deputy Kevin Berry five miles east of London on the Hal Rogers Parkway. A record check found Smith was wanted on three outstanding warrants for numerous traffic violations, theft charges and contempt of court charges.

Smith was charged with speeding, operating on suspended or revoked operator’s license, no insurance, and other traffic violations. He was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Traffic stop nets arrest

A driver and his passenger were arrested Saturday after it was discovered they both had outstanding warrants during a traffic stop, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

The arrests came about 5:30 a.m. after Deputy Kevin Berry stopped a gray Pontiac driven by Frank W. Rains, 23, of Gray, after he failed to stop at a stop sign on West Cumberland Gap Parkway.

Berry determined Rains had an outstanding warrant and his passenger, Jennifer Lovett,22, also of Gray, had two outstanding warrants.

Rains was charged with driving on a DUI suspended license, disregarding a stop sign and other traffic violations. He was wanted on a Knox County warrant for fourth-degree assault, terroristic threatening, alcohol intoxication and failure to appear.

Lovett was wanted on a Laurel County warrant for public intoxication and failure to appear and on a Knox County warrant for falsely reporting an incident and failure to appear.

Both were jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Man arrested after nearly striking police car

A London man was arrested Friday after he nearly struck a police car then led a deputy on a foot pursuit, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Tommy L. Robinson, 43, reportedly was swerving as he drove a red Chevrolet S10 along Conley Road about 8:30 p.m. and nearly struck the car driven by Deputy Mikey Ashurst. Robinson then swerved off the road and drove behind a business, where he left the vehicle and ran into a nearby field.

Ashurst chased Robinson and, when the deputy caught the man, Robinson struggled.

Robinson was subdued, arrested and charged with driving under the influence (third offense), reckless driving, operating on a suspended license, no insurance, expired registration plates, fleeing and evading on foot, resisting arrest, and other traffic violations.

Robinson was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Corbin man arrested for assault

A Corbin man was arrested Friday after he reportedly struck his girlfriend, bloodying her mouth and nose, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Michael D. Johnson Sr., 45, said his watch may have accidentally caused the injuries as he was getting his child out of his car.

Deputy Kevin Berry was sent to the call about midnight. He was told the girlfriend fled to her neighbor’s house to phone 911 for help.

Johnson was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault. He was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
