Farm fresh in Goldbug

Farmer’s market reopens today at Extension Office

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

Spring has officially arrived with the opening of the Farmer’s Market today in Goldbug.

Whitley County Extension Agent Garrard Coffey said the market opened today at 8 a.m. and will wrap up around noon.

“We’re really excited for the markets to open again this year,” Coffey said.

He said three farmer’s markets will be open once a week for local farmers and producers to sell their products to the local community.

Goldbug’s Farmer’s Market will be held each Saturday from 8 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Whitley County Extension office on U.S. 25W near I-75’s Exit 15.

The next Farmer’s Market to open its “doors” will be in downtown Corbin on Main Street from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday.

The third market to open will be in Williamsburg from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at its new location downtown in Bill Woods Park on Chestnut Street.

“While there may be limited produce available, we wanted to kick things off and get started on the 2014 season,” Coffey said. “This region suffered through a rough winter and we know the community is more than ready to welcome the warmer weather.

“We thought the best way to do that was to open our annual Farmer’s Market for the community.”

During the 2013 season, community support for the Farmer’s Market grew with the addition of the Corbin location — sales topped $55,000.

This year’s goal is to hit $100,000.

“We support the local producers — and welcome the community to support them through these markets as well,” Coffey said.
