Corbin Ind. Schools dropout age to be 18

Goes into effect 2015-16 school year

CORBIN — By Becky Killian / Editor

Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, the dropout age at Corbin Independent Schools will be 18.

With three of five members present, the Corbin Board of Education voted unanimously to raise the dropout age to 18 from the current 16.

The vote will allow the district to apply for a $10,000 state grant to be used for for dropout-prevention planning and other related purposes.

Earlier this year, the state General Assembly approved a bill to allow school districts to raise the high school dropout age.

Senate Bill 97 allows districts to increase the compulsory attendance age beginning in the 2015 school year. Districts that do so must have programs and resources in place for students at-risk of not completing their requirements for graduation.

Prior to the vote, board members discussed the importance of graduating to a student’s future success as well as the programs vital to ensuring students graduate.
