Bomb threat on Laurel bus under investigation

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A bomb detecting dog helped search a Laurel County bus Friday after one or more students on the bus said a bomb was on board, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

It isn’t known which student or students said there was a bomb on the bus, but the threat was made about 4 p.m. as the bus traveled south on Interstate 75. Root said the bus, which carried middle and high school students, stopped at the weigh scales so the driver could report the threat.

Root, along with numerous deputies, Kentucky State Police troopers, and KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers responded, as did Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and the Laurel County Fire Department.

The Kentucky State Police Hazardous Devices unit was called to help search the students’ backpacks and the school bus. The unit brought a dog to the scene, but it didn’t find any hazardous devices in backpacks or on board the bus.

Laurel County School officials assisted with the investigation and brought another bus to the scene to transport the students on to their destinations.

Deputies conducted a scene investigation, interviewed students and attempted to locate the students involved in the threat. No students were immediately identified as being the ones responsible for the threat.

The investigation continues by the sheriff’s office and school officials. Root said charges will be filed when the investigation is completed .

Those assisting were Root, Capt. Rodney Van Zant, Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, deputies Robbie Grimes, Kevin Berry, Daniel Grigsby and Gilbert Acciardo, as well as London Police Officer/School Resource Office Mike Holiday.
