A 14-year-old singer/songwriter from Corbin is among three finalists for a singing competition that will reward the winner with a recording session at Blackbird Studio.

Zac Hart, a Corbin High School freshman, is a finalist in the competition offered by the “Katie” show, which features hostess Katie Couric.

Zac’s dad, Jason Hart, 36, said his son got started in the competition by submitting an essay in which he had to explain why he deserved the opportunity to win the recording session. In that essay, Zac explained he may not deserve to win, but made a tribute to his musical mentor — country singer Andy Maiden — who recently died. As a result of that essay, Zac was among about 65 people who were invited to submit videos. From those videos, Zac — along with Emily Martin, of La Grange, and Jessica Weaver, of Madison, Va., were selected as finalists.

Voting is currently underway at the show’s website for viewers to select their favorite of the three videos. At some point, Jason Hart said the show’s producers will be in touch to let him know when the three finalists will appear on the “Katie” show.

Jason Hart said the exposure offered by the show is good for Zac, who has been singing since he was 7. Among the many accolades Zac has achieved include being the North American Country Music Association International’s “New Country Male Entertainer” and also “New Country Male Vocalist of the Year.” He has also held honors as the Tennessee Country Music Association’s “New Country Male Entertainer” and also the “New Country Male Vocalist of the Year” for 2010 and for 2009.
