Man appears in court for shooting woman

CORBIN — By LeeAnn Cain / Staff Writer

A Keavy man accused of shooting a woman appeared in Laurel County Circuit Court Friday.

Richard James Lawson, 36, allegedly shot Gena Smith, also of Keavy, on Feb. 3 as she fled the home where the two had been arguing, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root. Lawson was discovered, unconscious, still holding the rifle with which he is alleged to have shot Smith.

After a question was raised about some needed documents by Lawson’s public defender Mike Brophy, Circuit Judge Henry Johnson decided to schedule another pretrial conference for Dec. 20.

Lawson is charged with first-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment.
