Phase 1 bids for Sanders Park approved, Corbin, KY

Work on the first phase of the Colonel Sanders Park project was given the green light Monday by the Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission.

One bid for Phase 1 of the project at the corner of Main and Monroe streets in downtown Corbin was received by the commission’s board at their regular session. The bid came from EG&K Construction of Corbin at $10,386.36 for work on the park’s floor and planters.

After the bid was opened, a motion to approve the bid was made and approved.

Tourism board member Alan Onkst later proposed doing Phases 2-4 in the same manner.

Phase 2 of the project involves landscaping, with Phase 3 concentrating on concrete, while Phase 4 will handle fencing for the park.

A motion was made and seconded for Corbin Tourism to advertise for open bids for the three phases, which will be bid separately and advertised together. The motion passed.

Onkst added the board would close on the bids on Dec. 4.

Board members also approved requests for donations from two individuals at the meeting, held at the Tourism Community Room on Depot Street.

A request for $5,000 towards marketing efforts of the Corbin Industrial Development Commission was approved. Bruce Carpenter, Executive Director of the Corbin Economic Development Agency and the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, made the request during October’s board meeting. He was not present at Tuesday’s session.

Also approved was a $1,000 donation to Brad Ingle of the Border Bowl Committee. The money will go towards sponsoring the Border Bowl, the annual high school all-star football game held at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg.

The game features seniors from Kentucky playing seniors from Tennessee. This year’s Border Bowl will be the sixth annual game, and will be held Jan. 11, 2014.   

A separate request for $1,300 to sponsor three 30-second commercials for the Border Bowl on Fox Sports South was put under advisement by the board.

It was noted by Ingle and media specialist Jeff Meadors that the $1,300 sponsorship request was for if there’s a commercial made.

It was later mentioned making the commercial would cost more money, with Ingle saying “$5,000 would get a separate commercial produced.”

“I don’t see the value of producing a commercial for the Border Bowl. It’s not in the budget,” Onkst said.

“I’d like more information on this,” added the board’s Vice-Chairman, Tom Rose.

“We’ll take it under advisement,” said Chairman Sudhir Patel.

Approval was given to a a proposed “Seasons Greeting” Christmas light display to be placed on the south end of Corbin at the Days Inn near Exit 25 of I-75. Daniel Mackey of Celebration Lighting made the request, adding the only expense would be $350 for labor on putting the display up.

“If you’ll take care of the labor, we’ll take care of the product,” Mackey told the board.

Mackey also had discussions on the lighting, storage, maintenance and repair of the Christmas lights owned by the Tourism Commission, as well as for the Depot Building where the commission is headquartered.

The board’s financial advisor, certified public accountant Kyle Perkins, said the board’s audit is “currently behind,” and that the commission currently has $413,517.59 in available cash.

Later, board members went into executive session to discuss personnel matters. No action was taken.
