CORBIN — Barbourville Mayor David Thompson swore in newly-appointed Barbourville City Council member Janet Hyde during a brief ceremony at city hall Tuesday. Hyde stepped in for her husband, the late Gerald Hyde, who died Oct. 4.
During a special-called meeting Oct. 18, council members unanimously voted to approve Janet Hyde’s appointment to the council.
Thompson explained after that meeting that a governing body, in the event a member leaves his or her elected seat, has 30 days from the date of the vacancy to appoint a qualified replacement to complete the remainder of the elected term.
“’She’s excited about it,” Thompson said then. “She quoted Gerald (to me) and said ‘if it’s good for the people and good for the city — then I’m all for it.’”
