CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

Man, wife arrested for drugs

A Barbourville man and woman were arrested Saturday on drug and domestic violence charges, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Ervin Johnson, 25, and his wife Shalane Johnson, 22, were arrested following a domestic violence complaint. When deputies arrived, they found the couple in the middle of the road and deputies learned there had been a physical altercation at the residence.

According to Root, neighbors said they had seen Ervin Johnson chasing Shalane Johnson, and a struggle reportedly followed.

Upon arrest, Ervin Johnson struggled with deputies and reportedly kicked the windows and doors of the vehicle continuously en route to the Laurel County Correctional Center. Two syringes were also located on his person once inside the jail, as well as a large amount of cash, Root said.

Shalane Johnson was found to be in possession of various drugs and drug paraphernalia. She was in possession of hydrocodone pills, marijuana, a glass pipe, rolling papers, two needles, a plastic bag with used coffee filters that tested positive for amphetamines, six plastic bag corners that tested positive for amphetamines and digital scales.

The couple was arrested by deputies Kevin Berry, Shane Rice and Robbie Grimes.

Ervin Johnson was charged with fourth-degree assault-domestic violence, public intoxication-controlled substances, resisting arrest, first-degree promoting contraband and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance-first offense.

Shalane Johnson was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine)-first offense, second-degree possession of a controlled substance, and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine)-first offense.

According to Root, social services was called to the scene to assist in placing a child present with grandparents.

The Johnsons were jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
