Tenn family dies after car swept into creek

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

Tragedy struck a Tennessee family this week as they were passing through Whitley County.

According to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, Shannon Kier, 39, his wife, Susan K. Kier, 29, and their son, 2-year-old Lee Kier, were found dead in their submerged vehicle in Jellico Creek off of Newman Campbell Road.

That road is off KY-92 West.

Flood waters had overtaken parts of the road, according to the sheriff, and that’s how the family ended up in the water.

The Jacksboro, Tenn, family was helping a sister to move, Harrell said.

Just after 8 p.m. Friday, Whitley County 911 received a call about a family traveling from Tennessee into Kentucky.

Harrell said that they put out a description of the vehicle, a white, four-door 2003 Chevrolet Impala.

Saturday morning, the worst was discovered.

“The car and their bodies were discovered in the river,” Harrell said. “This was a very tragic accident.”

He said that more than 7 foot of flood waters were on the road. “They entered the water not realizing what they were dealing with,” Harrell said. “The current took the car to the river, where it rolled, then turned upright, and came to rest about 250 yards from where it entered.”

Goldbug Volunteer Fire and Rescue personnel, Williamsburg Police Department officers, troopers with the Kentucky State Police, Whitley County Emergency Services Manager Danny Moses, and Coroner Andy Croley.

The obituaries appear in today’s edition on Page 6.
