Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department responds to Sunday evening fire

CORBIN — By Becky Killian / Editor

When Josh Hart saw flames consuming his father’s house, his only thought was that his father might still be inside.

As he watched his father’s house burn and fire responders work to extinguish the blaze Sunday evening, Josh Hart, 25, said he had come by his dad’s house and put a load of clothes in the dryer before going outside to the shop. When he came back out, he saw the fire.

Fearing his dad, Jack Hart, was still inside, Josh Hart said he went into the home and tried to get back to his dad’s bedroom.

However, smoke filled the house.

“I couldn’t see when I ran in there,” he said.

Josh Hart turned to leave the house, but before he went back outside, he picked up a cordless phone to call 911. The phone wasn’t working, so he left the house and went to a nearby cousin’s home. Nobody was home, so he then went to his grandparents home where he was able to call 911.

It wasn’t until Josh Hart returned to the burning house that he heard his father call his name and learned his dad wasn’t home when the fire broke out.

Josh Hart said he ran to his dad, overcome with emotion.

As firefighters worked to contain the fire, Josh Hart still hadn’t found a family  pet — a Chihuahua and Pomeranian mix — and feared she might have been trapped in the home.

“I don’t know if she made it,” Josh Hart said.

Firefighters from Oak Grove responded about 6 p.m. to battle the fire at 677 Black Diamond Road and soon called Woodbine for assistance as smoke poured from the roof line of the home.

Whitley EMS also responded.

No further details were available as of deadline Sunday.
