CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

The vacant seat of the late Barbourville City Councilman Gerald Hyde was filled by appointment Friday.

During a special-called meeting of the Barbourville City Council, members gathered to appoint a replacement after the recent death of Hyde, who passed away Oct. 4.

According to Mayor David Thompson, Friday’s meeting was three minutes long.

Thompson said he told council members that on Wednesday, he had spoken with Hyde’s widow, Janet Hyde, about the possibility of filling her late husband’s council seat.

“I spent approximately an hour, hour and a half talking about her possible interest in (his seat),” Thompson said.

Janet Hyde told Thompson she would be interested, the mayor said.

Council member Wilma Barnes motioned to accept this appointment, with a second from Council member Gary Williams.

“This was the most unanimous decision they’ve had,” Thompson said, adding that all council members voted to approve the appointment of Janet Hyde to the city council.

Thompson explained that a governing body, in the event of a member’s leaving their elected seat, has 30 days from the date of the vacancy to appoint a qualified replacement to complete the remainder of the elected term.

Janet Hyde, who will be officially sworn in this coming week, will finish the term of her late husband.

“’She’s excited about it,” Thompson said. “She quoted Gerald (to me) and said ‘if it’s good for the people and good for the city — then I’m all for it.’”
