Sasser appears in Laurel Circuit Court

Lily man charged in several armed home invasion attempts

CORBIN —

By John L. Ross/ Staff Writer

A Lily man considered “armed and dangerous” who was sought in connection with several attempted home invasions in February had a pretrial conference in Laurel County Circuit Court Friday.

Jeffery S. Sasser, 48, appeared before Judge Tom Jensen with his defense attorney, Kelly Ridings.

Sasser faces several charges dating back to 2011, including first-degree robbery, receiving a stolen firearm, first-degree burglary, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, theft by unlawful taking a vehicle, second-degree fleeing or evading the police on foot, and two counts of being a persistent felony offender.

Jail records indicate he is at the Laurel County Correctional Center under two cash bonds totaling $30,000, however, the auto theft charges have him listed as jailed without bond.

During Friday’s court appearance, Sasser was on the docket for two separate hearings — the pretrial conference, and a probation revocation hearing.

Ridings told the court she had not seen anything on Sasser’s newest charges levied in February.

Because of that, both the conference and the revocation hearing were rescheduled for May 17.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root said February’s arrest began with a telephone call Feb. 12.

A Brandon Mill Road resident reported an armed man attempted to invade the residence, but was not allowed to enter the home. The suspect fled on foot.

At least three more attempted home invasions were reported during the course of the day, prompting the sheriff’s department to begin a manhunt. Those attempted home invasions were at residences on KY 1023 and Echo Valley Road — and just like the first one, the residents were at home.

Deputies released a description first, but soon after had a suspect in mind — Sasser. Photos of Sasser were circulated to request the public’s help in locating the man.

At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sasser was spotted on Boggs Road, off of Slate Road, by Constable Tim May and Deputy Josh Scott.

When May and Scott attempted to approach Sasser, he allegedly fled on foot. May and Scott chased him a short distance, catching him. After a “brief scuffle,” he was taken into custody in the woods.

A .22-caliber revolver was found concealed on the suspect, and law enforcement also recovered a Halloween mask, three knives, rope and duct tape, according to Root.

Sasser was indicted in March on the latest charges.

In March he was handed a four-count indictment for the charges he faced Friday. Those charges were first-degree burglary, receiving a stolen firearm, first-degree robbery, and first-degree persistent felony offender.

Friday he was indicted for the charges Ridings said in court she had no information on. He received a five-count indictment Friday.

The first count indicts him for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The second count charges second-degree fleeing or evading the police on foot. The third count charges resisting arrest. The fourth count charges carrying a concealed deadly weapon after he was allegedly found in possession of a .22 caliber handgun. The fifth count charges first-degree persistent felony offender after his previous convictions. All counts on this indictment allegedly occurred Feb. 12. He was convicted in 1997 of burglary, for which he received 10 years. In 2005 he was convicted of second-degree burglary, for which he received six years. In 2012 he was convicted of theft by unlawful taking, for which he received three years.
