Girlfriend of escapee jailed

CORBIN — By John L. Ross, Staff Writer

The girlfriend of a Whitley County Detention Center escapee has been jailed, charged with helping him, according to Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird.

Katherine Wheeler, 39, of Williamsburg, was arrested by the Williamsburg Police Department Thursday, he said, alleging she was assisting her boyfriend in his escape.

Wheeler now faces charges of first-degree hindering prosecution, second-degree escape, and contempt of court libel/slander resistance to order. She remains jailed at the detention center without bond.

On April 1, her boyfriend, 34-year-old Shannon Wynn, walked off a work detail at the Kentucky State Highway garage, according to Jailer Ken Mobley. It happened during a lunch break.

Authorities have searched for him ever since, according to Mobley, who added they have been close to catching him.

Wynn was jailed in January on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, according to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, who added those were his second set of charges for that offense. Wynn will likely face more charges.

If any citizen knows the location of Wynn, contact the jail at (606) 549-6027, or sheriff’s department at (606) 549-6006, or 911 dispatch at (606) 549-6017.
